The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team (6-8, 4-3) will face off against the University of Mobile (8-8, 3-4) in a crucial conference road game Saturday, January 12 at 3:00 p.m. The Wolf Pack are coming off a thrilling victory over William Carey on Thursday while Mobile will be looking to bounce back after losing to 22nd ranked Faulkner on the road.
Loyola’s last game provided plenty of drama as Rebekah Greer’s three pointer with 21 seconds remaining helped lift Loyola over the Crusaders 64-61. The weekday games helped separate a very crowded pack in the Western division of the SSAC. Loyola is now tied with Belhaven in third place in the conference, while Mobile sits in a three way tie for fifth place with William Carey and Spring Hill.
Loyola will be led by Jasmine Brewer who is averaging 16.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. She is also the conference’s seventh leading percentage shooter with a tidy 50% shooting for the season. Brewer is third in the conference in scoring and seventh in rebounding. Megen Berner is second on the team in both categories with averages of 11.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest. Shayne Charles tied her career high with 17 points against William Carey and will be looking to carry that momentum into the matchup against the Lady Rams.
The Lady Rams are coming off an 80-67 loss to #22 ranked Faulkner. In the game, Briana Edwards scored 20 points to lead Mobile. Molly Speed added 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range and Deonica McCormick finished with 8 points, 8 assists and 9 rebounds.
McCormick is the team’s leading scorer averaging 15.8 points a game. She also is the team’s leading passer with 4.46 assists a night. Edwards is second on the team in scoring with 13.1 points a night, but pulls down a team high 6.7 rebounds a game.
The game has plenty of conference implications as a win by Mobile will bring both schools to a .500 record. However a win by Loyola would go a long way towards distancing themselves from their conference foes and securing a top three spot in the SSAC’s Western division.
