NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team improved to 11-1, opening the 2012 calendar year with an 82-54 victory over the University of New Orleans Privateers on Monday afternoon in The DEN. With the win, the Wolfpack continue on its best start in school history.
Sophomore Jasmine Brewer notched her second double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 21 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Brewer’s 11 rebounds tied her season-high. Three other Wolfpack players contributed double-digits. Senior guard Keiva Council added 19 points, six assists, four rebounds, and three steals, while sophomore guard Amy Moody scored 13 points. Freshman Callie McNally finished off the group with 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
“I was happy with the way we played coming out of the holiday break,” said head coach Kellie Kennedy. “We emphasized defense in practice, and I was pleased on how we executed things on that side of the floor forcing 19 turnovers. We also stressed our post play and getting to the free throw line. Jasmine Brewer had an excellent game was successful on that end.”
Despite giving the Privateers the first two points of the game, the Wolfpack led for all but a minute and 24 seconds in the first half. Three Loyola players had double-digits in the period including Brewer who already had her double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The ‘Pack only allowed 20 Privateer first half points which is its second best on the year. Loyola forced 13 UNO turnovers, of which it converted into 16 points, while outscoring the Privateers by a margin of 18-2 in the paint. The ‘Pack also enjoyed a 10-6 edge on second chance points.
With the score 45-20 at the half, Loyola expanded upon its lead following the break. The Wolfpack went up by as many as 31 points in the first five minutes of the half to take a commanding 65-34 lead. During the second half stretch, the ‘Pack increased the margin to 37 with the scoring 80-45 at the 4:19 mark. From there, Loyola enjoyed a cushion of no less than 28 points en route to an 82-54 victory.
Four Privateer players also had double figures. Miriam Sipos scored 16 points, and Kayla Chaney had 11. Megan Buckley and Keri Thomas added 10 points a-piece. Thomas also had three take-a-ways.
Loyola has now won four consecutive games as it prepares to head back into SSAC play at Brewton Parker on Friday, Jan. 6. Tipoff is set for 4:30 CT.
