NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola women’s basketball team continued its winning streak to six games as it defeated NCAA foe Louisiana College 79-63 Tuesday night in The DEN.
Sophomore Jasmine Brewer posted 25 points and senior Keiva Council scored 24 points to lead a balanced Wolfpack scoring attack that saw seven players get on the board. Junior Megen Berner, sophomore Amy Moody, and freshmen Raven Lane and Rebekah Greer had seven points each.
Loyola continues is hot start to the season by improving to 6-0 on the season, while Louisiana College drops to 2-1. The victory was the first in Loyola women’s basketball history in 11 tries over the Lady Cats.
“I’m proud of our girls tonight,” said head coach Kellie Kennedy. “Louisiana College’s style of play is very hard to play against. However, it’s great for us because we have to play against teams like that this year. When we settled down, we played very well defensively, and things really started to go our way.”
The game got off to a physical start. Louisiana College committed 20 personal fouls throughout the game while Loyola had 18. The Wolfpack capitalized at the line, especially in the second half as the shot 70.6 percent.
The ‘Pack also took advantage of its size scoring 46 points in the paint as the Lady Cats only had 22. The majority of the 46 points in the paint came off of turnovers as Loyola scored 18 points off Louisiana College miscues.
The Wolfpack defense forced 23 turnovers and 11 steals, four by Brewer and three by Moody. Brewer also added nine rebounds. The Lady Cats did not have one player score in double-digits for the first time this season.
Roslyn Wilmer and Natosha Gottlieb led Louisiana College with eight points each. Danisha Allison grabbed seven boards while Keana Frank had four steals.
Loyola returns to the court when it travels to Natchitoches, La. to take on Northwestern State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. (CST).
