NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University women’s tennis team earned its first victory of the season over Louisiana State University- Shreveport Saturday morning at the University of New Orleans Tennis Center. The Wolfpack earned an 8-1 victory over the Lady Pilots. Later in the afternoon, the men and women both fell to the University of Mobile 0-9 and 1-7.
For the morning match, the ‘Pack won all three doubles matches as no. 1 seed Meghan deBaroncelli and Frances Bonnin defeated Lauren Stevenson and Heather McCatchen 8-6. The pairs of Katie Beargie and Christiana Krtalic as well as Alexander Chater and Chelsea Keene decisively took down their opponents 8-3 and 8-4.
In singles play, Loyola only dropped four games in 14 sets. deBaroncelli, Caitlyn Chambers and Keene all earned straight set victories. Bonnin and Krtalic dropped one game each, and Beargie fell 5-7 and 3-6.
In the afternoon match, deBaroncelli defeated Stephani Tomito in the no. 1 singles slot. deBaroncelli and partner Bonnin put up a tough fight, but fell to Mobile’s no. 1 doubles team 8-8 (5-7) in a tie break.
For the men, Devon Belcher took on Fernado Paiva at the no. 1 singles spot in a hard fought match before falling 4-6, 6-4, (8-10).
The teams return to action Saturday, Feb. 18 in a double-header against Belhaven and Tougaloo at the University of New Orleans Tennis Complex. Start time is set for 10 a.m. against Belhaven and 2 p.m. against Tougaloo.
