Loyola volleyball signs Texas duo

New Orleans, La. – Loyola University head volleyball coach Tommy Harold announced the signings of Ashley Abendschein from Georgetown High School in Georgetown, Texas and Rachael Roth from Ursuline Academy in Dallas for the 2009 season.

Abendschein, a 6’0 outside hitter/middle blocker, led her high school as a three year starter and was captain in her senior season. She led the team with 267 kills and 96.5 blocks on the season. Abendschein also plays for the prestigious Junior Olympic team Austin Juniors out of Austin. She is expected to vie for a role as an Outside Hitter for the Wolfpack next season.

“We are extremely happy to have Ashley join our program,” said Harold. “She exemplifies the term student-athlete and will help push the program to new heights. What she brings to the team in terms of experience and her physical presence along the net will certainly help the Wolfpack in the fall season and in the years to come. I think Ashley will be a tremendous addition to the team as we compete again for the conference title.”

Roth was a four year letterman for Ursuline and as senior captain, she led her team to a 28-14 record. Roth was twice named to the all-district team and named 2nd team all-state for the 2008 season. On the club level she has competed at the national level reaching the Junior Olympics with Dallas Juniors finishing in the top 25 for the last 4 seasons at the Open level. Roth is experienced both as a middle blocker and a right side hitter.

As well as leading her team on the volleyball court, Rachael also competed in track at Ursuline Academy running the 300M hurdles and the high jump.

“We’re extremely excited to have Rachael join our program,” said Harold. “She is an exceptional athlete and her experience at the highest level of competition with Dallas Juniors will make the transition to the college game a smooth one. She will be an excellent addition to our program and to the Loyola community.”

Last season, the Wolfpack volleyball team earned a share of the GCAC Regular Season Championship after going 7-1 in conference and finished with an overall record of 17-9.
