Loyola women’s basketball completes recruiting class

Posted: June 29, 2009 for Women's Basketball

New Orleans, La. – Kellie Kennedy, Loyola women’s basketball head coach, has announced the signing of three players; Megen Berner of Ponchatoula High along with Dominican graduates Molly Emig and Colette Morris. With the signing of these three players, Kennedy wraps up her 2009-10 recruiting class with six new additions to the Wolfpack.

Megen Berner, a 5-11 forward from Ponchatoula, Louisiana, was named first team All-State last season for the Lady Waves. Berner, who also made first team All-District as a senior, was selected to the LHSAA all-star team. As a junior, Berner made second team All-State and also first team All-District. Along with being a two-time team MVP at Ponchatoula, Berner, who graduated with honors, made the 5A All-Academic team and is a member of the National Honor Society.

"Megan is a great student and player who will bring a great work ethic as well as her ability to score and rebound on both ends of the floor,” says Coach Kennedy. “We are very excited to have her as part of our program for the next four years."

Molly Emig, a 5-5 point guard, lettered all four years and was a four-time All-District selection at Dominican. As a senior, she was named to the Clarion Herald Elite Girl’s Basketball team and was selected to the Lake Pontchartrain All-Star team. In her last three seasons, she averaged 8.4 points, 2.7 assists, and shot 40% from the field.

“Molly is a very heady point guard who also has the ability to score. She handles the ball well and has great vision,” says Kennedy. “I know that she will be a great steady leader for us early on in her career.”

Colette Morris, a 5-6 shooting guard, averaged 10.1 points and shot 37% from behind the arc for Dominican. Morris also averaged two rebounds and had 30 steals as a senior.

"Colette is a great shooter and someone you have to guard,” says Kennedy. “She will add another dimension to our team and we are very excited about that.”

Together, Emig and Morris led Dominican to a district championship in 2008. Last season, they were district runners up and went to the state quarterfinals.

Loyola returns seven players from last season, including four starters. Last year, the Wolfpack won both the GCAC regular season and tournament titles, and made their third straight appearance in the NAIA National Tournament.
