Cassard signs four players for 2009 baseball recruiting class

New Orleans, La. – Loyola head baseball coach Gerald Cassard has announced the signing of four players for his 2009 recruiting class. Joining the Wolfpack are Matthew Guerry, Anthony Sofio, III, Caleb Templet, and John Tyree.

Matthew Guerry lettered four years in baseball at The Episcopal School of Baton Rouge, which included winning a state title in 2004. Guerry was named District MVP and first team All-State as a senior. A utility player for the Knights, the 6-0 right-hander will be used as a pitcher for the Wolfpack. Guerry plans to major in political science.

Anthony Sofio, III, who attended high school at Holy Cross, comes to Loyola after playing one season at Northwestern State. In high school, Sofio, was first-team All-District as a receiver in football and lettered three years in baseball for the Demons. A 5-8 outfielder, Sofio hit .390 with three home runs, 25 RBI, and stole 12 bases as a senior while being named All-District honorable mention. Sofio will study business at Loyola.

Caleb Templet, a 6-1 infielder, is a native of Sorrento, Louisiana where he graduated from St. Amant. For the Gators, he played one year of soccer and lettered two years in baseball. During his senior season, he hit .380 with six home runs, had 30 RBI, and was named first team All-Parish and second team All-District. Templet will major in biology/pre-med.

John Tyree, a 6-1 right-handed pitcher, graduated from Destrehan. Tyree lettered four years in baseball for the Wildcats and was named All-District, All-River Parish, and was an Academic All-State honorable mention as a senior. He finished his high school career with a 24-11 record, posted a 2.75 ERA, and saved eight games. Tyree, who graduated cum laude, will study pre-med at Loyola.

“We are extremely excited about having these young men as a part of our program”, said Coach Cassard. “They are exceptional on the field, and in the classroom. We are expecting them to make an immediate impact.”
