New Orleans, La. – Mike Kelly, a senior on the Loyola baseball team, is participating in the Jayhawk Collegiate League as a member of the Derby Twins.
Kelly, a pitcher and outfielder for the Wolfpack, has pitched in four games this summer for the Twins. In 22 batters faced, he’s posting a perfect 0.00 ERA, giving up four hits while striking out six.
“This is a great opportunity for Mike in the Jayhawk League,” said Loyola head baseball coach Gerald Cassard. “It’s one of the better college summer leagues where he’ll get to play with some of the country’s best players. This experience will definitely help Mike going into his senior season.”
Last season for the Wolfpack, Kelly hit .307 with three home runs and 23 RBI. On the mound, he had a 2-3 record in 30 plus innings, striking out 29.
The Jayhawk League, which consists of seven teams from Kansas and Missouri, has been around since 1976. A few of their notable alumni who play in the Major Leagues include two-time MVP Albert Pujols, five-time All-Star Lance Berkman, and all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman.
