Seven Loyola Teams Receive NAIA Scholar Award

New Orleans, La. – The National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) named seven Loyola University New Orleans athletic teams with their Scholar Team Awards during the 2008-09 academic year.
Under the direction of head coach Tommy Harold, the volleyball team took top honors for Loyola with a 3.3 grade point average. The team was also recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association with a Scholar Team award for maintaining at least a 3.3 GPA for the season.
In his first season, cross country and track head coach Andy Canegitta had three women’s teams recognized; cross country (3.17), indoor track (3.01), and outdoor track (3.01).
The women’s and men’s basketball teams also won the award this year. In her first season with the Wolfpack, Kellie Kennedy’s women’s team had the second highest (3.17) grade point average at Loyola. Dr. Michael Giorlando’s team had a 3.03 GPA for the year.
To round out the recipients, second year coach Gerald Cassard’s baseball team held a 3.04 GPA.
A team must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average to be considered for the NAIA Scholar Team award.
