Loyola volleyball splits season opening double header

Jackson, Miss. - After falling to Union University in the opening match of the Millsaps Tournament on Friday, the Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team finished the day off with their first victory of the season, defeating Rhodes College 3-1.
Loyola (1-1) took the first two games against Rhodes, 25-15 and 25-19. Rhodes fought back to take the third game, 25-15, but Loyola bounced back to put the Lynx away in the fourth game with a score of 25-15.
Freshman Kailey Tuthill and sophomore Gina Gill led the attack for Loyola with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Freshman Samantha Worsham assisted 23 Wolfpack points for the match. Defensively, Amanda Oldani led Loyola with 13 digs.
In the first match, the Wolfpack played the Union Lady Bulldogs close, but were unable to pick up a game, losing the match 3-0 (21-25, 22-25, 23-25). Gill led the way with 13 kills, and freshman Ashley Abendschein tallied 10 kills in the loss.
Loyola wraps up the tournament tomorrow with Piedmont College at 10 a.m., and will take on host Millsaps College at 2 p.m. For live updates, please visit www.gomajors.com.
