Loyola opens up Rhodes Tournament with two wins

Memphis, Tenn. - The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team swept both matches today at the Rhodes Tournament, shutting out Birmingham Southern and host Rhodes College, 3-0.
In the early game against Birmingham, the first set started out close, with the Wolfpack taking an early 11-8 lead. Loyola, however, put together seven straight points, and finished the game outscoring the Panthers 14-4 en route to a 25-12 win.
The second game was much closer, with the teams playing to nine ties. Freshman Ashley Abendschein delivered seven kills in the set, and Loyola closed out the 25-21 victory.
In the third set, Birmingham Southern never posed as a threat, as Loyola repeated game one’s dominate performance, cruising to an easy 25-12 victory to take the match.
Abendschein led Loyola with 12 kills, while Gina Gill added 10. Samantha Worsham assisted 30 points, including 16 in the second game. Amanda Oldani led the Wolfpack with 21 digs, and Rachael Roth added four blocks while serving five aces.
Against host Rhodes College, Loyola took the three games, 25-19, 25-20, and 25-15. Abendschein and Gill led the attack with 12 kills each. Worsham contributed 25 assists, and Oldani was the defensive leader with 14 digs.
Loyola (5-2) wraps up the weekend at Rhodes with two games on Saturday. The first match is against Freed-Hardeman at 11 a.m., followed by a rematch with Union University at 3 p.m.
