Loyola volleyball loses GCAC match to Mobile

New Orleans, La. – In a battle of GCAC unbeatens, the Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team lost a tough match Tuesday night at The Den to the University of Mobile, 3-1.

In the first game, Loyola (9-7, 5-1) held a slight lead in the beginning until Ashley Abenschein served up two aces to extend the advantage to 13-7. After a timeout, Mobile rallied back with five straight points to shrink the lead to one. The Wolfpack kept the slight advantage throughout, and took the first game 25-22.

Mobile (8-7, 4-0) lead early in the second set 11-7 until Samantha Worsham served three straight points to make it 11-10. With the score knotted at 17’s, Mobile outscored Loyola 8-5 down the stretch to tie the match at 1-1.

In the third game, the Lady Rams dominated early on, taking a 13-5 lead. The Wolfpack cut the lead down to four at 19-15, but the Rams would go on to win 25-19.

In the fourth set, a kill by Abenschein put Loyola up 10-4. The Rams kept their composure, and slowly chipped away at the lead until going up 18-17. After a few lead changes, Mobile closed out the match with a 25-22 victory.

Loyola was led by Gina Gill with 17 kills. Samantha Worsham had 26 assists, eight digs, and three aces. Amanda Oldani led with 21 digs, and Gill added 11. Abendschein chipped in with three aces.

Kelly Sherling led the Lady Rams with 15 kills. Whitney Knight added 13 kills, while leading in digs with 20. Melody Tenny assisted on 39 points.

Loyola finishes up their home stand this weekend when they host the Hampton Inn Wolfpack Classic. The Wolfpack are scheduled to play two games on Friday, starting with a match against St. Thomas at 2:30 p.m.
