Loyola volleyball falls in five sets at Belhaven

Jackson, Miss. - The Loyola volleyball team traveled to Jackson, Mississippi on Tuesday night and lost a hard fought battle to Belhaven, 3-2 at Rugg Arena.
In the final set, Loyola jumped out to an early 5-3 lead, with Gina Gill scoring three kills. Down 9-11, Belhaven would score two straight to tie the game. Gill broke two ties down the stretch with kills before the Lady Blazers scored the final three points, winning the match 18-16 on an assisted block.
Belhaven (14-15, 3-3 GCAC) took the first and third sets, with the first game being close throughout. Loyola finally took a one-point lead in the first at 22-21. However, Belhaven would answer with three points before taking the game 25-23. In the third set with the Lady Blazers up 9-8, they outscored Loyola 6-1 and went on to win 25-21.
Loyola (12-9, 5-2 GCAC) answered in the second and fourth sets, with convincing 25-14 and 25-16 wins. In the first set, Loyola’s advantage was as much as 15 before Lindsay Mullinix closed out the game with a kill. In the fourth set, Gill extended Loyola’s lead to 22-11 after a kill and an ace, and an Ashley Abendschein kill sealed the win for the Wolfpack.
Gill led the way for Loyola with 23 kills, with Abendschein adding 11. Samantha Worsham finished with 42 assists, and Amanda Oldani had 19 digs and four aces.
The Wolfpack are back in action on Friday, Oct. 23 when they head to Houston for a weekend tournament hosted by the University of St. Thomas. Their first match will be against Rio Grande at 5 p.m.
