Loyola volleyball takes out Rio Grande 3-1

Houston, Texas - The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team opened up the St. Thomas Tournament on Friday night with a 3-1 (25-12, 25-13,19-25, 25-17) victory over the University of Rio Grande.

In the first set with the game tied at 7-7, Gina Gill scored six of seven straight Loyola points, including serving four aces. The Wolfpack went on to win 25-12 after Gill closed out the game with her fourth kill.

The second game saw Loyola (13-9) jump out to a 5-0 lead, capped off by an ace by Ashley Abendschein. The Wolfpack continued to extend their advantage, with Kari Price delivering a kill to make the score 20-10, forcing Rio to call a timeout. Gill would end the game at 25-13 with another ace.

The third game was closely contested, as Rio (12-14) and Loyola played to their fifth tie at 14-14. The Redstorm then scored the next five points, and held the lead to take the game 25-19.

In the final set, Loyola broke a 4-4 tie with six straight points, going up 10-4 on an ace by Price. The Wolfpack’s lead then grew to 10 at 16-6 after an ace by Rachael Roth. The Redstorm came as close as 7 points, but a serving error would seal the win for Loyola.

Gill led the way for Loyola with 19 kills and six aces. Abendschein finished with 8 kills, and Lindsey Mullinix and Roth added 7 each. Samantha Worsham assisted 37 points, while digging 16 attacks. Taylor Jones led the Wolfpack with 4 blocks.

The Wolfpack finish off the weekend with two matches on Saturday, the first at 2 p.m. against Embry Riddle (AZ) followed by a 4 p.m. match with host St. Thomas.
