Posted: October 30, 2009 for Men's Basketball

NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola men’s basketball team will open the college basketball season in Louisiana tonight with a 7 p.m. tilt against Carver Bible College in The Den.

The Wolfpack features All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) preseason selections senior guard Sean Bennett and junior forward Ryan Brock .

It is the second preseason accolade for Brock, who was tapped by the Sporting News as Preseason All-American Honorable Mention. Last season, the 6-3 junior forward from Brother Martin in New Orleans was named All-GCAC as well as the conference’s Newcomer of the Year. He led the conference in scoring with 19.9 points per game with 518 points for the season-fifth on the Loyola single season list.

The NAIA also named Brock All-American Honorable Mention for his 2008-09 campaign. Brock was also honored as Louisiana Small College Player of the Year by the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches and second team All-Louisiana by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Bennett, a 5-10 senior guard from Mandeville, was an All-GCAC selection last season. The St. Paul’s grad led the conference in free throw percentage at a 86.0% clip, which was fourth in the NAIA. Bennett also shot 41.4% from behind the three point arc- second in the GCAC.

Senior point guard Torry Beaulieu returns for his final season in the maroon and gold. Beaulieu, a graduate of Glen Oaks in Baton Rouge, was second in the GCAC with 4.97 assists per game. He averaged 10.8 points per game with a 44.3% shooting percentage. He has scored 1092 points in his career.

Loyola and Carver faced off twice last season. The Wolfpack won the first contest with a 108-57 victory on Oct. 31 in The Den. The second contest was more competitive with the Wolfpack holding off the Cougars 79-72 on Dec. 1 in Atlanta.

Other games around the state this weekend include SUNO at Fisk Unviersity on Oct. 31, Xavier vs. Carver Bible on Oct. 31, and Dillard at University of Arkansas-Fayetteville on Nov. 2, and LSU-Shreveport vs. Arlington Baptist on Nov. 2.
